ZoneAlarm

Update: Don't update to zlsSetup_70_337_000_en.exe (only one they have available)
It is a bloated download 38.8Mb whose purpose is to get you to buy their $50 Security Suite.
The prior version, a stand alone Firewall, was only 13.7Mb which I can send to you (they no longer offer it as a download). Send an email to "zonealarmATwebrb.us" changing the AT to @.
How bad is it? In order to update from my prior verson (6.5) it said I must first uninstall my current Anti-Virus program (so I would have to buy theirs?).
I lot of folks are having problems with it. See:
http://forums.zonealarm.com/zonelabs/board?board.id=inst

Easy-to-use firewall blocks hackers and other unknown threats. Intrusion Blocking systematically identifies hackers and blocks access attempts. Stealth Mode automatically makes your computer invisible to anyone on the Internet. If you don't have a firewall you should download and run their free program (they also sell a Pro version and other security products).

Comodo Firewall Pro 3.0

I have not tried Comodo Firewall Pro but PC Magazine has reated it very high. Looks like a good alternative to ZoneAlarm. You may wish to read their review here and then download it here. You may also want to try their free antivirus.

Ashampoo FireWall

This is the one I am using in addition to a number of their other software programs. From their website: If you don’t have a degree in computer science, using a firewall program can be quite frustrating. In addition to all the confusing jargon, current firewalls are getting to be very big programs. Sometimes you have the feeling that you’re installing an entire office suite instead of a basic network tool.
The brand-new Ashampoo FireWall FREE is different. Its Configuration Assistant guides you through every step of the simple setup process. And Easy Mode makes using it a breeze – you don’t need any special technical knowledge and everything is explained clearly.
Ashampoo FireWall FREE is also amazingly compact. Even with its four additional security tools it’s a tiny program that uses very little memory and computer resources. You get the heavy-duty protection without heavyweight overload on your system.

CCleaner

CCleaner is a freeware system optimization and privacy tool. It removes unused files from your system - allowing Windows to run faster and freeing up valuable hard disk space. It also cleans traces of your online activities such as your Internet history. But the best part is that it's fast (normally taking less that a second to run) and contains NO Spyware or Adware! I've customized mine using Options, e.g. I've set it to retain certain Cookies vs deleting all of them. I have not used all of its features, such as cleaning the registry since I use a different program. I strongly recommend you take the Quick Tour to see what it can do before you download and use it. Some features are tricky if you are a computer novice and don't know what you are doing. Click "Analyze" before you click "Run Cleaner" so you can first see what it will be doing. Once you are comfortable with what it will do you can skip "Analyze".

OpenOffice

If Microsoft Office is too expensive for you try OpenOffice - it is free. With it you will be able to open MS Office DOC, XLS files.

Password Scrambler

Password Scrambler is a browser add-on that allows you to automatically generate secure, hard-to-guess passwords for every site you visit, based on a master password of your choice. One password is all you need to remember - it creates indifidual passwords for you. It achieves this by uniquely "scrambling" your password for every site you visit. Passwords it creates look like this: s1NuHSQ8hpBK which are very secure.

I don't use the Password function of RoboForm (see the next item); I use this program. But RoboForm remembers the passwords I create for various websites and automatically pops up. I just click the "Fill Forms" button and it puts in my User ID and the Password I created using Password Scramble which I could never memorize. Below is a picture of what it looks like when I want to log on to Sprint. I just click on the Fill & Submit button.

• Generates Secure Random Passwords (I don't use this function; see above)
• Encrypt passwords and personal data using 3-DES

• Take RoboForm with you on a Jump Drive for ultimate portability
• Sync your passwords and notes to Palm or Pocket PC

Note: the Free Version is limited to 10 Passcards so if you want to automatically log on to more than 10 websites you will need the Pro version (which I have).

Asterisk Key

Asterisk Key shows passwords hidden under asterisks. A neat small program. Open it and click on "recover" which is in blue and it will show the password which you can copy to your clipboard if you wish. Great if your PC remembered the password but you forgot it. An exampe would be the passwords you created for your email addresses using Outlook Express.

Google Picasa

Picasa is software that helps you instantly find, edit and share all the pictures on your PC. Every time you open Picasa, it automatically locates all your pictures (even ones you forgot you had) and sorts them into visual albums organized by date with folder names you know. You can drag and drop to arrange your albums and make labels to create new groups. Picasa makes sure your pictures are always organized.

Picasa also makes advanced editing simple by putting one-click fixes and powerful effects at your fingertips. And Picasa makes it a snap to share your pictures – you can email, print at home, make gift CDs, instantly share via Hello™, and even put pictures on your own blog.

SUPER AntiSpyware

I no longer us Ad-Aware or Spybot Search and Destory. Found a much better one:
SUPER AntiSpyware.

Spybot Search and Destroy

Spybot - Search & Destroy can detect and remove spyware of different kinds from your computer. Spyware is a relatively new kind of threat that common anti-virus applications do not yet cover. If you see new toolbars in your Internet Explorer that you didn't intentionally install, if your browser crashes, or if you browser start page has changed without your knowing, you most probably have spyware. But even if you don't see anything, you may be infected, because more and more spyware is emerging that is silently tracking your surfing behaviour to create a marketing profile of you that will be sold to advertisement companies. Spybot-S&D is free, so there's no harm in trying to see if something snooped into your computer, too :)

CWShredder

A small utility for removing CoolWebSearch (aka CoolWwwSearch, YouFindAll, White-Pages.ws and a dozen other names). Spybot S&D and Ad-aware tend to forget essential parts of the hijack, so until they update, you can use this to completely remove the hijack. This program is updated to remove the new variants once they come out.
Visit their website which is a little confusing, you may want to simply
Download the program a small exe file that requires no installation

Belarc Advisor

The Belarc Advisor builds a detailed profile of your installed software and hardware and displays the results in your Web browser. All of your PC profile information is kept private on your PC and is not sent to any web server. You may want to print it and keep it for reference.
